Piyo Class

Starting January 31 we will be offering a PiYo class-Tuesday night at 5:45pm-6:45pm at the Castlegate II Community Center. This is a great way to build community and get to know some of your neighbors!

PiYo is an incredibly effective body-transformation program that combines Pilates and yoga-inspired moves, all set to a faster pace, so you get your strength, fexibility, and cardio all in each workout. PiYo delivers the long, lean muscles and flat, toned abs of Pilates, a firm butt and strong arms like you'd get from yoga, and the weight-loss benefits of fat-burning cardio. The movement pattern goes from longer (16 count) to shorter and faster (4 count). There is a lot of getting up and down from the floor to standing position. This program will work your core like no other and is great for athletes who want to stretch their hip flexors, IT Band, hamstrings, and lower back. It is great for folks who want to get in a great workout without  pounding on the joints. Classes are one hour  and are $8 per class. Sessions will run 8 weeks allowing for no class the week of Spring Break. There will be one free make up class in case you must miss a scheduled class. To register, please contact Mary Timoney at 979-428-5530 and she will get you all set up.

Monarch Butterfly Community Workshop

Home owner and neighborhood associations are invited to have a representative attend "Monarch Butterflies and Other Pollinators Habitat" community meeting and workshop on Friday, July 29, 2016, 1:30 pm, USDA Conference Room, 1001 Holleman Drive East, College Station, Tx. (Southwest of Post Oak Mall).

Registration is needed for educational materials and to reserve a space until limit is reached. Register - AMGC4U@gmail.com - E-mail name, organization name, and contact telephone number. No fee. Registration open until spaces are filled. A flyer is attached.

Learn more about the monarch butterfly habitats, pollinator patches at community parks/schools and/or homes, and receive educational materials on milkweed and pollinators. Attendees will receive two types of seeds for Monarch Butterflies.

First, seed packets of a Butterfly Retreat wildflower mix from the City of College Station Parks Department that will cover over 20 square feet will be given to attendees. To plant an area at a city park, contact the College Station Parks and Recreation Department to sign up. College Station Parks and Recreation has provided seeds for 3 to 5 acres of community parks - Veterans Park & Athletic Complex, Richard Carter Park, Stephen C Beachy Central Park, Memorial Cemetery, and Aggie Field of Honor have been planted with milkweed earlier this year. This is a part of the Mayor's Monarch Pledge activities.

Second, swamp milkweed seeds to be refrigerated/stratified and then prepared to be planted in early spring will be given to attendees. Barbara Keller-Willy, Monarch Gateway Director, one of the speakers, has several projects in Texas and has 43,000 milkweed plants allotted for restoration projects. You'll also receive a treepot seedling container flat donated by Brazos Valley Tree Farm, to start your milkweed plants.

Also, register your butterfly garden - go to the A&M Garden Club web page - AMGardenClub.com - for directions to register in the National Pollinator Garden Network. Let’s be sure that Monarchs have a place to find nectar flowers and milkweed. If I can assist you, please let me know.

The A&M Garden Club is coordinating the meeting, with the Texas Master Naturalists Brazos Valley; the Parks & Recreation Departments of College Station, Bryan, and Navasota; Monarch Gateway; and USDA/TAMU Future Scientists Program and other groups. Gardening related groups and individuals interested in their own landscape or at a community park or school should register to attend.

Thanks. Hope you can attend if you'd like to attract monarch butterflies to your garden.

-- Jane Cohen, A&M Garden Club Butterfly Chair
